Security on the Internet
Do we have any security on the internet? Paul Gates says "our security has not been taken away, we are GIVING it away." We are too comfortable sharing our information with every Tom, Dick and Harry out there. It is so convenient to save your passwords on every website because who actually remembers all their passwords? Not me. Our information is out there for the taking and Professor Paul Gates from Appalachian State University explains a little more about internet security and vulnerable technologies.
We give our information out to grocery stores, online shops and anywhere else we come into contact with on a daily basis, like social media sites. Grocery stores, like Facebook, will sell your information to advertisers. They want to see what you are buying, how often you are buying it and at which location you are buying it from. Surprised? Shouldn't be. We are the product of these businesses, not the other way around.
So I bet you're wondering which technologies are the most vulnerable for hackers. If your laptop has a webcam someone could be watching you at all times. The same applies to other camera technologies such as baby monitors and surveillance cameras. The new Amazon Echo that everyone loves, records everything you say and is ALWAYS listening to you. Dr. Gates suggests that you refrain from putting your credit card information into your Echo because it is not as secure as going online.
A lesson we can all learn from this is to be careful where we put our information and do not create an account at every store or site you go to. Hackers are out there and they are continuously outsmarting the smart technology. Be careful out there y'all and remember what Dr. Gates said, "Our security has not been taken away, we are giving it away."
